HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 3/17/2010 CITY OF GLENDALE, ARIZONA MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS COMMISSION HELD WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17,2010 LIBRARY BOARD CONFERENCE ROOM SECOND FLOOR 5959 WEST BROWN STREET 4:00pm. The meeting was called to order at 4:04 p.m. by Chairperson Darrell Criswell. Commission members, Enid Spear, Winifred Kultala, M. B. Finnerty, and Scott Mink were in attendance. Representing city staff were Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, J. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator and Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator. Commissioner Mayberry was absent. Commissioner Manuel Burruel arrived at 4:26pm. APPROVAL OF THE MEETING MINUTES A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Spear to APPROVE the minutes of the February 17, 2010 meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Mink and carried unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENTS At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. No public comments. 2010-2011 PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM Staff presented an overview of the Performing Arts Program for fiscal year 2010/11. The programs are for projects taking place between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011 at venues within Glendale city limits. Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator, presented the guidelines and application form for the program. He explained that a name change had taken effect and the program will now be referred to as the Performing Arts Partnership Program. The deadline for applications is Friday, April 23, 2010. He suggested the regular Arts Commission meeting be moved to Wednesday, April 28, 2010, to allow the Commissioners time to review the applications and make assessments. Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, remarked that last year, the Arts Commission funded 11 programs. The Arts Commission awards partnership support up to 4,000 for projects in the fields of theater, dance and music. Applicants must reside in or work in partnership with an organization within the city limits of Glendale. Chairperson Criswell asked for a motion on this item. A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Spear to APPROVE moving the regularly scheduled Arts Commission Meeting on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 to Wednesday, April 28, 2010 in order to review the Performing Arts Partnership Program 1 applications. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Mink and carried unanimously. 2010 VIA COLORI EVENT Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator,presented information on the Via Colori Street painting Festival and Art Show. Each artist created their own piece of artwork on an assigned space with colored chalk. The event took place in Murphy Park on March 6th and 7th 2010. The event was a success even though it rained out on the second day. Mr. Curtis Goldstein, artist, was the special guest on hand at the event. Mr. Villalobos presented pictures of Mr. Goldstein's art design. He explained that by using only colored chalk, Mr. Goldstein had created an exceptional piece of art drawing on a 6x12 large canvas. The drawing is sprayed with an adhesive, which preserves the chalk and allows it to settle on the canvas. The piece can be viewed along with the winners of the 2010 Glendale Centennial Plein Air Painting Event. Currently, the pieces are on display at the Promenade at Palmaire Center adjacent to the downtown office building located at 58th and Palmaire Avenues. Commissioner Spear stated this was one of the nicest pieces of artwork the city has had the opportunity to own. Everyone agreed. The Commission discussed the best locations for this art piece. All agreed that the Glendale City Council Chambers would be an ideal location for the artwork. Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, stated everyone was pleased with the success of this event despite the rain on the second day of the event. She suggested adding a children's component next year. Chairperson Criswell commented that next year's event might be even bigger now that they know what to expect and had received valuable feedback. Mr. Villalobos agreed. Chairperson Criswell asked for a motion on this item. A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Spear to APPROVE to display the artwork from the Via Colori Art Show Event created by artist Curtis Goldstein in the Glendale City Council Chambers. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Finnerty and carried unanimously STAFF REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE Public Art Project Updates Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, reported there was a delay in the Public Safety Memorial project due to some unforeseen issues at the foundry with another work of art. This resulted in other projects being delayed. She will have additional details at the next meeting. Police Museum Update Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator, reported on the Police Museum. He stated police headquarters had been very pleased with the proposed revisions; however, asked to 2 discuss some minor issues. The department initially had proposed to exhibit 3000 pieces of police memorabilia including helmets, badges, medals, action photos and many more items. The department has been very fortunate to have received many donations from many supporters. Commissioner Burruel remarked that this has been a great partnership for the Arts Commission. Mr. Villalobos agreed it was a great experience to be able to assist in designing such a collection. Commissioner Spear suggested the department look into the non-profit grant programs for additional funding for the project. Chairperson Criswell asked if there were any plans to also produce a Fire Department museum. Mr. Villalobos responded no. Art Maintenance Updates Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator, reported on maintenance issues. He stated that the "Old Friends" art feature was now at 100%. He added that routine maintenance was on track. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS There were no comments. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at 4 p.m. at the 2nd Floor Board Conference Room, Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street, Glendale, Arizona. ADJOURNMENT A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Burruel to ADJOURN the meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Finnerty and carried unanimously.
