Main Library 5959 W. Brown St. Glendale, AZ 85302 Members Present: Others Present: JoAnn Lee, Chairperson Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library & Arts Director Cherie Hudson, Vice Chair Mr. Paul Li, Assistant City Attorney, Glendale Katy Bickerstaff Mr. Erik Strunk, Community Partnerships Director Camille Donley Ms. Cynthia Burmeister, Secretary, Glendale Library Sarah Mitchell Char Sharp Allison Tedford Excused Absence: Kenneth Wixon Sandra Bun CALL TO ORDER Ms. Lee, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Ms. Lee requested a motion to approve the minutes of the meeting held November 19, 2009. A motion to approve was made by Ms. Sharp. The motion, seconded by Ms. Bickerstaff, passed unanimously. OPEN MEETING LAW Paul Li, Assistant City Attorney, provided information on the Arizona Open Meeting Law. The presentation included defining terms and actions related to public meeting law. He also discussed the duties of the Board as defined in the Glendale City Code and the procedures for notification, agenda preparation and minute posting. CENSUS 2010 Mr. Erik Strunk, Community Partnership Director, provided an informational presentation on Census 2010. The presentation included a brief history of the Census, Glendale's last statistical count from the 2000 Census, the importance of the Census and the process for completing such an important task. LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD GOALS Ms. Lee read the proposed goals to the Board and asked if there were any changes or clarification needed, There were none. Ms. Lee asked for a motion. A motion to approve the goals was made by Ms. Tedford. The motion, seconded by Ms. Sharp, passed unanimously. LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MISSION STATEMENT Library Advisory Board members began working on establishing a mission statement. This item will be revisited at the next meeting. LIBRARY DIRECTOR UPDATE Ms. Komernicky provided updates on the following: • Employee of the month for February: Patsy Kavanaugh • We will be receiving new lights at the Main library from the recently awarded stimulus grant. Additionally, repairs will be made to the roof and skylights. • The Mega Booksale was cancelled. Staff is conducting a pilot project with online sales for some booksale items. We will continue to have our ongoing booksales within our libraries. • Ms. Komernicky discussed the current deficit with the city budget. Departments have submitted cost savings scenarios. The library is most likely facing a reduction in hours of operation. The City Manager's must present a balanced budget to our City Council. There will be three public meetings in March at the following locations: o March 3, 2010 6:00-8:00 p.m. Foothills Aquatic Center o March 4, 2010 6:00-8:00 p.m. Desert Mirage Elementary School o March 8, 2010 6:00-8:00 p.m. Glendale City Council Chambers • The Library is in the process of evaluating our fees, including the non-resident fee. We will bring additional information to the Library Board when the analysis has been completed. The current non- resident fee is $10.00 per quarter. • Congratulations to Adult Services Librarian Cyndee Landrum who is the current AZLA president. Cyndee as also applied to Simmons College to obtain her Doctorate degree through an American Library Association grant. • There are four employees scheduled to attend the Arizona Library Leadership Academy this year. They are: o Casey VanHaren, Library Operations Supervisor o Emily Linkey, Librarian at Foothills o Coreen Wagner, Librarian at Velma Teague o Greg Kinder, Librarian at Velma Teague • There were six graduates from the Glendale Leadership Academy for Development, "GLAD": o Cathy Foland o Tami Miller-Earick o Nina Grubish o Janet Loyd o Christie O'Hara o Casey VanHaren Congratulations to all on ajob well done! LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS Ms. Donley asked if the Culture Pass Program will continue. Ms. Komernicky stated that she has not heard anything official at this time. The current Cultural Pass program continues until April. Ms. Lee talked about her visit to Chicago including sidewalk/storefront libraries that offered small collections and computer services to the public. She also visited the Newberry Library, a privately endowed library now open to the public. The first floor has a memorial collection to Abraham Lincoln. ADJOURNMENT Ms. Lee requested a motion to adjourn the meeting. Ms. Sharpe moved that the meeting be adjourned. The motion, seconded by Ms. Hudson, passed unanimously.
