HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 1/20/2010 CITY OF GLENDALE, ARIZONA MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS COMMISSION HELD WEDNESDAY,JANUARY 20, 2010 FRUIT PACKING SHED GALLERY SAHUARO RANCH HISTORICAL AREA 9802 N 59TH AVENUE GLENDALE,ARIZONA 4:00 p.m. The meeting was called to order at 4:07 p.m. by Chairperson Darrell Criswell. Commission members, Manuel Burruel, M.B. Finnerty, Winifred Kultala, and Spear were in attendance. Representing city staff were Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, Sandra Keely, Public Art Coordinator, J. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator and Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator. Commission members Mink and Mayberry were absent. APPROVAL OF MEETING MINUTES A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Finnerty to APPROVE the minutes of the November 18, 2009 meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Kultala and carried unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENTS At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. No public comments. 2010 JURIED FINE ARTS EXHIBITION The Arts Commission will review the Selection Panel's recommendations for purchase awards for the city's two-dimensional artworks collection from the Glendale Arts Council's Annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibition. The purchased artworks will be installed in city buildings. Commission member Criswell presented this agenda item concerning the Glendale Arts Council's Annual Fine Arts Exhibition at Sahuaro Ranch's Fruit Packing Shed Gallery. At the November meeting, Commission members Finnerty and Burruel volunteered to serve on a panel to review the exhibition to make recommendations for purchase awards for the city's portable artworks collection. The Arts Commission has made purchase awards at this exhibition for many years. The Commission members reviewed the artwork selected and were very pleased with the selections. The artwork will be installed in public spaces in city buildings. The Commissioners discussed a variety of issues concerning the placement of art pieces, best size for optimal placement, locations, as well as controversial subject matters. Listed below are the artwork pieces selected. Artist Purchase Price • Joan Thompson $300 1 • Elisa Greensher $280 • Yamamoto $800 • Joseph Carragh $540 • Mike Padian $517 • Sue Hunter $850 • Marett Webb $675 • Martha Goodrich $350 • Marg Nelsen $795 TOTAL 9 artworks $5,107 A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Burruel to APPROVE purchasing 9 artworks for $5,107 for the city's art collection. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Spear and carried unanimously. 2010 CHILDREN'S ART EXHIBIT The Arts Council has submitted a request of$1,000 to use for prize money for the Children's Art Exhibit at the Fruit Packing Shed. The judge for this exhibit will be Mr. Rex Gulbranson. The Commissioners agreed to approve the request for funds for the Children's Art Exhibit. A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Finnerty to APPROVE the request of $1,000 to use for prize money for the Children's Art Exhibit at the Fruit Packing Shed. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Kultala and carried unanimously. 2010 GLENDALE JAZZ AND BLUES FESTIVAL Ms. Sandra Keely, Public Art Coordinator, presented the selection panel recommendations for public artists for the 2010 Jazz and Blues Festival in downtown Glendale. She provided a PowerPoint presentation of each applicant's past work. The city's goal with this temporary public art project is to bring another dimension to the festival with elements of amusement and knowledge of temporary artwork. The art budget is $4,500 per project and must cover all expenses. The festival will be held Saturday, April 17`h and Sunday, April 18`h, 2010. She explained that each applicant's references were checked thoroughly and all had great results. Commissioner Spear inquired as to the city having any liability if artists worked with questionable materials. Ms. Keely responded that she will be happy to receive advice from Risk Management should problems occur. Commissioner Spear also inquired as to the city being able to keep the temporary artwork. Ms. Keely explained that should the city decide to keep an item, it would be written into the contract. The item in question is the mural ball being created to commemorate the city's centennial. The following were the selection results: • Joan Waters • Mary Lucking (2 proposals selected) • Kristine Kollasch • Robert Annan (Alternate) 2 A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Burruel to APPROVE $4,500 per project in funding for site specific artworks for the 2010 Jazz and Blues Festival submitted by Joan Waters, Mary Lucking, and Kristine Kollasch. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Finnerty and carried unanimously. ART AWAKENING MURAL Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator updated the Commission members on the Sahuaro Ranch Mural at the November 18, 2009 meeting. Mr. Villalobos explored the possibilities of lighting for the art mural. His findings concluded that it would not be cost effective to pursue lighting options at this time since the site was not visited by many after dusk. In addition, they do not want to encourage people wandering the site at night. Everyone agreed. STAFF REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE Public Art Project Updates Ms. Sandra Keely, Public Art Coordinator, provided an updated on the Public Safety Memorial. The project is on schedule for May of 2010. She stated that the early design of the South Downtown Gateway/Howard Meehan project was on track. She reported The Plein Aire Event is scheduled to take place during the Chocolate Festival on February 6, 2010. Paintings are executed outdoors from real life. The artists will have a map to help them navigate. This year's emphasis will be on Glendale's Centennial. Ms. Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator and Commissioners Spear and Burruel volunteered to judge the paintings. Adult Center Exhibit Updates Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator, invited everyone to explore this year's Glendale Unified High School District Student Exhibit at the Glendale Adult Center from December 15 through January 25, 2010. The show will host over 50 new works from Glendale's talented high school students. Art Maintenance Updates Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator, stated that the art maintenance on the Sensory Garden fountain was complete. All windows at the Foothills Center have been clean and checked. Museum Updates Mr. GibranVillalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator provided an update on the West Valley Art Museum closing. The museum was actively seeking locations where art pieces could be housed. It appears that they have found a storage area in the City of Peoria. They have also sold part of their collection. Meeting Schedule Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, revised the meeting schedule to include an Arts Commission meeting in February which had previously been vacated because of the decision to alternate meetings every other month. She explained the Arts Commission had items on the agenda for February that needed their attention. 3 COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Commissioner Spear inquired about the Arizona Arts Congress held at the State Capitol Lawn every February. She asked if the Commissioners were being invited to attend this year. Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director stated she had not received information on the event; however, will find out the particulars and relay the information to interested Commission Members. Commissioner Spear explained this was a great opportunity to learn and meet your representatives. Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator, agreed and indicated he was already scheduled to attend. Ms. Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator and Commissioners Spear and Finnerty also indicated they would like to attend. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at 4 p.m. at the 2' Floor Board Conference Room, Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street, Glendale, Arizona. ADJOURNMENT A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Finnerty to ADJOURN the meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Spear and carried unanimously.
