HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 4/27/2009 CITY OF GLENDALE,ARIZONA MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING FOR THE ARTS COMMISSION HELD MONDAY,APRIL 27, 2009 LIBRARY BOARD CONFERENCE ROOM SECOND FLOOR 5959 WEST BROWN STREET GLENDALE,ARIZONA The meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m. by Chairperson Darrell Criswell. Commission members Enid Spear, M.B. Finnerty, Winifred Kultala, Manny Burruel and Winona Passmore were in attendance. Representing city staff were Rex Gulbranson, Arts and Culture Administrator, Melinda Bergman, Community Arts Coordinator and J. Gibran Villalobos, Collections/Exhibitions Coordinator. Sandra Keely, Public Art Coordinator was absent. PUBLIC COMMENTS At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. There were no public comments. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Spear to APPROVE the minutes of the March 18, 2009 meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Kultala and carried unanimously. 2009/2010 PERFORMING ARTS GRANTS PROGRAM Mr. Rex Gulbranson, Arts and Culture Administrator, presented an overview of the Performing Arts Grants Program. He stated that requests from applicants totaled $63,700 for the Commission's budget of$33,750. The grants are for projects taking place between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010 at venues within Glendale city limits. The Arts Commission reviewed the 17 performing arts grant applications received from 17 organizations. The selection and recommendations from the Arts Commission were arrived at by keeping in mind the current economic situation. Commissioner Spear declared a conflict for applications submitted by Arizona Broadway Theatre, The Bead Museum, Foothills Branch Library and the West Valley Arts Council. Mr. Gulbranson expressed his appreciation to the Arts Commission for doing their due diligence on this important program for the arts sustainability and development. He noted these programs bring meaningful art culture to the City of Glendale. The following are the Commission's funding recommendations: • Arizona Authors Association not recommended • Arizona Broadway Theatre $3,000 1 • Arizona o a Theatre Company $3,500 • Arizona Opera not recommended • Arts Council of the North Valley not recommended • Ballet Arizona $3,500 • The Bead Museum not recommended • Center Dance Ensemble $3,500 • Chamber Music West not recommenced • Desert Sky Middle School, Deer Valley Unified School District $3,000 • Glendale Public Library Foothills Branch $3,500 • Peoria Unified School District not recommended • The Phoenix Conservatory of Music $3,000 • The Phoenix Symphony $3,000 • Scottsdale Cultural Council $3,500 • Theater Works not recommended • West Valley Arts Council $3,500 TOTAL $33,000 A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Spear to APPROVE recommended funding for 10 organizations for 10 performing arts grant projects for 2009-10 tbtaling $33,000. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Burruel and carried unanimously. STAFF REPORTS/UPDATES Public Arts Projects Ms. Melinda Bergman, Community Arts Coordinator reported on this item. She stated th Jazz and Blues Festival had been a great success. She remarked that less people had attended d suspects it was due to the valley having many events planned on that weekend. Mr. Rex Gulbranson, Arts and Culture Administrator, commented that the artists had done a very good job with enticing the pubic to get involved. He noted this year the artists had a good rapp I rt with staff and fellow artists at the festival. He added they had hosted a big dinner for the artist after the event, which was well received. Chairperson Criswell commented on the great bands that were featured at the festival. Community Arts Ms. Melinda Bergman, Community Arts Coordinator, reported on the Summer Art Camp. She explained that registration has been slow moving compared to last year; however, anticipates it filling up quickly once the on-line registration gets going. She noted several popular programs were being filled quickly. Adult Center Exhibit Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Collections and Exhibitions Coordinator, presented this item. He provided details on an upcoming art exhibition featuring close-up photos of face wrinkles starting June 27, 2009 through July 20, 2009. He reported on upcoming events for The izona 2 Watercolor Association being held March 30, 2009 to May 30, 2009, The Phoenix Artist Guild June 27, 2009 to July 20, 2009 and the Art Awakenings August 28, 2009 to October 30, 009. Art Maintenance Updates Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Collections and Exhibitions Coordinator, presented this item. He indicated maintenance had been done on"A Tribute to Firefighters", "Seeing Beyond" and "Glendale Strong" artworks. Mr. Gulbranson commented on Mr. Villalobo's attentiveness in visiting and taking care 1 inventory of artwork around the city. A complete inventory and documentation for the aitwork collection in Glendale will soon be completed and will be able to be viewed on-line on the city's intranet. Commissioner Spear inquired as to city artwork being appraised. Mr. Gulbranson stated(city artwork was self-insured. However, artwork belonging to the city is not for sale; therefor , it did not warrant appraisal at this time. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Mr. Rex Gulbranson, Arts and Culture Administrator, informed the Commission that the Public Safety Memorial Project was back on track. NEXT MEETING I The next meetings for the Arts Commission will be on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 and on June 17, 2009. The regular meeting on May 20, 2009 is cancelled. The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. and will be held in the 2"a Floor Board Conference Room at Glendale Public Library, 599 West Brown Street in Glendale. ADJOURNMENT A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Burruel to ADJOURN the meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Spear and carried unanimously.
