MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING FOR THE
ARTS COMMISSION
HELD WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30,2009
LIBRARY BOARD CONFERENCE ROOM
SECOND FLOOR
5959 WEST BROWN STREET
The meeting was called to order at 5:03 p.m. by Chairperson Darrell Criswell. Commission
members, Manuel Burruel, M.B. Finnerty, Winifred Kultala, and Scott Mink were in attendance.
Representing city staff were Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director and Sandra Keely,
Public Art Coordinator. Guest in attendance was Cathy Gorham, Acting Deputy City Manager,
Karen Hesser, Deputy Parks and Recreation Director, Paul Bernardo, Parks and Recreation
Manager, Karen Puthoff, PSA Art Awakenings and Martin Moreno from Las Artes De
Maricopa. Commission member Spear and J. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections
Coordinator were absent.
INTRODUCTIONS
New Arts Commission member Rebecca Mayberry, representing the Yucca District, was
introduced. The Commissioners welcomed Commissioner Mayberry.
PUBLIC COMMETS
At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission
may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency
exists. There were no public comments.
APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
There were no minutes to approve at this time.
PRESENTATION OF THE DESIGN FOR SAHUARO RANCH MURAL
Mr. Martin Moreno of Las Artes De Maricopa and Ms. Karen Puthoff of PSA Art Awakenings
presented a presentation on the Sahuaro Ranch Design Mural. Mr. Gustavo Mc Grew of PSA
Art Awakenings was not in attendance due to a medical emergency. Mr. Moreno discussed
details of the actual mural and provided a completion date of November 7, 2009. Ms. Puthoff
commented on a reception event being held at Sahuaro Ranch, also on November 7th, to celebrate
the mural's completion. She stated the reception was open to dignitaries, staff and artists. She
provided an early copy of the brochure that will be used to promote the event.
Ms. Sandra Keely, Public Art Coordinator, presented a video of the Sahuaro Ranch area where
the mural will be placed. She also provided a computerized rendering of what the mural would
look like once completed.
Commissioner Mink asked if the students were the only ones doing the artwork. Mr. Moreno
responded, yes.

A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Burruel to APPROVE the Sahuaro
Ranch Design Mural by PSA Art Awakenings. The MOTION was SECONDED by
Commission member Mink and carried unanimously.
STAFF REPORTS/UPDATES
Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, read from two thank you letters from the
Phoenix Symphony and Ballet Arizona for the performing arts programming funds. She noted it
was always nice to have feedback from organizations to help reinforce the Commission's
commitment and know that their work was appreciated. Chairperson Criswell stated he had
attended the Ballet's performance and was immensely amazed at its beauty. He encouraged
everyone to attend at least once.
Ms. Sandra Keely, Public Art Coordinator, reminded the Commissioners about the upcoming
performances by Phoenix Symphony Woodwind Ensemble being held at Desert Garden
Elementary School at 9:30am and 10:30am on Wednesday October 7, 2009. Ms. Keely reported
on the Phoenix Conservatory of Music after school program called Taiko and World Music being
held at Bicentennial South Elementary School, which started September 8th. They will provide
24-31 visits throughout the 2009/2010 school year.
Ms. Keely also provided information on the West Valley Meeting, held on October 6, 2009 at
11:00am. She stated this event was sponsored by the West Valley Arts Council. They highly
recommend attending this meeting since they believe this effort was critical to finding new
sources of public funding for the continued success of the arts.
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Commissioner Finnerty inquired as to how the Bead Museum was fairing since concerns had
been raised that it might have to close. Ms. Komernicky explained the museum has been
receiving a lot of support and donations.
NEXT MEETING
The next meeting for the Arts Commission will be on Wednesday, November 18, 2009. The
meeting will begin at 4 p.m. and will be held in the 2nd Floor Board Conference Room at
Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street in Glendale.
ADJOURNMENT
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Finnerty to ADJOURN the meeting. The
MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Kultala and carried unanimously.
As the 40 - -ere no further comments, the meeting was adjourned at 4:45 p.m.
