MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING FOR THE
ARTS COMMISSION
HELD WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2009
LIBRARY BOARD CONFERENCE ROOM
SECOND FLOOR
5959 WEST BROWN STREET
The meeting was called to order at 3:59 p.m. by Chairperson Darrell Criswell. Commission
members, Manuel Burruel, M.B. Finnerty, Winifred Kultala, and Enid Spear were in attendance.
Representing city staff were Sue Komemicky, Library and Arts Director, Sandra Keely, Public
Art Coordinator and J. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator.
INTRODUCTIONS
New Arts Commission member Scott Mink representing the Ocotillo district was introduced.
The Commissioners welcomed Commissioner Mink.
PUBLIC COMMETS
At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission
may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency
exists. There were no public comments.
APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Spear to APPROVE the minutes of the August
19, 2009, Art Commission Meeting with a revision that the Arts Commissioners presented Mr.
Gulbranson with a farewell gift at the last Arts Commission meeting. The MOTION was
SECONDED by Commission member Burruel and carried unanimously.
DISCUSSION ON ARTS COMMISSION MEETING SCHEDULE
The Commissioners facilitated a discussion concerning the current Arts Commission meeting
schedule. It was suggested by Chairman Darrell Criswell, to schedule meetings every other
month since many of the art projects were on hold because of the budget situation.
Commissioner Burruel agreed, but asked that staff continue to keep them updated with any
developments via e-mail. Everyone agreed. The Commissioners agreed to hold a special
meeting in October, followed by a regularly scheduled meeting in November. Additionally, the
December meeting will be cancelled and next year's meetings will be held every other month,
unless noted.
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Finnerty to APPROVE the revision for next
year's Arts Commission meeting schedule, of meetings to be held every other month unless
noted. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Burruel and carried
unanimously.
STAFF REPORTS/UPDATES
Performing arts Event schedule:
• Ballet Arizona: Sunday, 9/27: 7pm Sahuaro Ranch Park Historic Area, Glendale.

• Phoenix Symphony Woodwind Ensemble: Desert Garden Elementary School at 9.30am and
10.30am on Wednesday October 7th 2009.
• Phoenix Conservatory of Music after school program begins at Bicentennial South
Elementary School September 08th Taiko and World Music. They will provide 24-31 visits
throughout 2009/2010 school year.
Public Arts Projects
Ms. Sandra Keely, Public Art Coordinator, presented this agenda item. She reported that the
Jan and Blues Festival's Request for Qualification has been sent out with a deadline of October
6, 2009. She commented that very soon, she will be assembling a panel to oversee this item.
The Public Memorial project had been approved and work has begun. She will be updating the
Commission on any new progress. The 2010 summer arts camp program has been finalized.
The Parks and Recreation Department will be handling the camps on-line registration. She also
reported on Mr. Gustavo McGrew, President of PSA Art Awakenings, and Mr. Martin Moreno,
Las Artes de Maricopa, proposed mural art project for Sahuaro Ranch Historic Area. She noted
they had recently received a$10,000 dollar grant for this project. The deadline for this project is
November of 2009.
Adult Center Exhibit
Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator, reported on this item. He reminded
everyone of the PSA Art Awakenings Annual Exhibition beginning September 17`h through
October 28`". A reception will be held on September 17, 2009 at 4.30pm-6.30pm.
Art Maintenance Updates
Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator, reported on this item. He passed out
postcards advertising the Art Awakening exhibit currently on display at the Glendale Adult
Center. He reported that the Planning Department had requested the Arts Commission update
their artwork on the second floor. He stated that with the new on-line inventory, he will be able
to access and review many art pieces. He remarked on several ongoing repair projects underway
around the city. He noted he will be taking over Mr. Rex Gulbranson's place in updating the arts
newsletter.
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Commissioner Spear commented on an advanced training seminar for Commissioners. She
encouraged anyone interested to attend.
Commissioner Mink thanked the Commissioners for a warm welcome and added he looks
forward to working with everyone.
The Conunissioners welcomed the reappointment of Chairperson Criswell.
NEXT MEETING
A special meeting for the Arts Commission will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2009.
The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. and will be held in the 2nd Floor Board Conference Room at
the Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street in Glendale. The next regular meeting for
the Arts Commission will be held on November 18, 2009.

A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Spear to ADJOURN the meeting. The
MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Bumrel and carried unanimously.
