LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD GOALS
Board members were asked to discuss their progress toward the established goals for FY 08-09:
• At least once per year, tour the libraries located inside or outside Glendale that may be similar to
existing libraries in Glendale
• Provide bi-annual updates regarding library visits
• Participate in a minimum of one program or event and report experiences to the Library Advisory Board
• Participate in an established community event to promote libraries
• Conduct a board meeting in another Glendale Library location
Ms. Lee visited the Velma Teague Branch Library, attending Lynn Toler's program. She also visited libraries
in Ephesus, Turkey and Alexandria, Egypt during her travels this year. In addition, Ms. Lee participated in the
Mega Book Sale at Main Library as well as a meeting at the Foothills Branch.
Mr. Bates visited other libraries and was disappointed to note that another library charges patrons for use of the
Internet.
Ms. Hudson attended the book sale this year and noted that it was meager, as compared to past years. She not
only uses the Glendale Libraries as a patron, but visited two other libraries as well. She has attended the
Farmer's Market downtown as well as other Parks and Recreation events.
Ms. Burr has visited the Peoria Public Library and also attended a program by local author Diana Gabaldon.
She also assists as a volunteer by pulling weeds and picking up litter in the garden. Ms. Burr also noted that the
Glendale Arts Council recently purchased for the library a five-part video series on the history of which beads,
which she found very interesting.
Ms. Donley is an avid user of the library's website and has participated in both dance classes and movie
discussions groups at the Foothills Branch.
LIBRARY DIRECTOR UPDATE
Ms. Komernicky provided updates on the following:
• Awards--"Employee of the Month"Award—Marianna Hancin, Bibliographic Services Administrator at
the Main Library, was recognized for her outstanding leadership. She maintains an open door policy for
her staff and leads by example. Marianna also has served on a variety of committees for the City of
Glendale, and has represented the Glendale Public Library throughout the state with her service to the
Arizona Library Association.
• Budget Update—Regarding the Capital Improvement Budget, the recommendation is that construction
of the West Branch Library be delayed until FY 2013-2014.
• Reorganization—a reorganization of the libraries has begun, in order to deal with the upcoming
retirements. Ten current employees will retire prior to June 30, in addition to the 2.5 full-time
equivalents who have recently retired. A reception to honor the retirees will be held on May 27th, from
1-3 p.m. at the Foothills Branch Library.
• Other Updates—Ms. Komernicky asks board members to note the banner on the library's website
recognizing National Library Week. It features a variety of our patrons expressing what the library
means to them.
