HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 2/21/2007 CITY OF GLENDALE, ARIZONA MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS COMMISSION HELD WEDNESDAY, FEBURARY 21, 2007 GLENDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY 5959 WEST BROWN STREET, GLENDALE The meeting was called to order at 4:04 p.m. by Chairperson Jackie Markowitz. Commission members, Winona Passmore, Enid Spear, Manuel Burruel and Kathleen Roe and Darrell Criswell were in attendance. Commission member Janet Culbertson was absent. Representing city staff was Rex Gulbranson, Arts and Culture Administrator, Melinda Bergman, Community Arts Coordinator, and Carrie Brown, Public Art Coordinator. Approval of Minutes A correction to the minutes was made concerning the title, Art Education, to be changed to Public Arts Updates and to add Art Education Updates to the Adult Center Exhibit title. A motion was made by Commission member Burruel to approve the minutes of the January 17, 2007 meeting, as corrected. The motion was seconded by Commission member Roe and carried unanimously. Public Comments At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists There were no public comments. Chairperson Markowitz introduced City Councilmember Yvonne Knaack and stated she was delighted with her attendance. Chairperson Markowitz also welcomed new member Darrell Criswell to the Commission. Councilmember Knaack stated that she wanted to meet the members of the Arts Commission. She said that part of her job is to get to know the people working on the various city boards and commissions. She commented that she has heard what a wonderful job the Arts Commission is doing. She added that she wanted them to know how important art is to her and to show her continued support. Portable Artworks Ms. Brown and Ms. Bergman made a presentation on the process for purchasing portable artworks for exhibiting in city buildings. Ms. Bergman stated that the art program had requests for artworks to hang in public areas in the offices for Utilities and the City Prosecutor. Ms. Brown presented the 24 recommended artworks under consideration to the Commission. Commissioner Burruel stated that he was one of the three judges and was very impressed with the process and selections by the panel. Mr. Gulbranson said that he was also excited about this project and would like to see it continue each year. The commissioners were in agreement to move forward with this project and recommended purchasing the artworks for the city's collection. The selection panel, which met on January 19, 2007, reviewed 52 applications from artists throughout the Greater Phoenix area, recommended purchasing 24 artworks. The motion was seconded by Commission member Roe and carried unanimously. STAFF REPORTS 2007-2008 Performing Arts Granting Program Updates Mr. Gulbranson presented this item. He stated that he and Ms. Bergman had worked hard in getting the word out on this item. He estimates having contacted close to 200 organizations. Ms. Bergman said she has been in contact with the area schools and art teachers. Chairperson Markowitz commended them on their work. Public Art Projects Report Mr. Gulbranson reported on the status of the Downtown Pedestrian Enhancements project. He stated that approval of Howard Meehan's contract will be considered by the City Council on February 27". He said the project has fallen behind schedule because of unforeseen issues in acquiring the property on the NE corner of Myrtle and Grand Avenues. The Commission will continue to be updated as the project progresses. Adult Center Exhibit Updates—Arts Education Updates Ms. Bergman presented this item. She stated that the Picture Glendale photography project is moving forward. She reported that locations had been approved by the housing program for public artworks to be installed at the three rental homes communities. Ms. Bergman reported that the Bring Back a Week professional development workshops for art teachers from Glendale Elementary School District were well attended, with 25 teachers participating. The projects the teachers worked on were projects that the students will he working on in the future. Art Maintenance Update Ms. Bergman stated that now was the time for maintenance and cleaning of all sculptures before the summer heat arrives. Other Staff Updates Mr. Gulbranson reported on the Bead Museum's upcoming World Tour fundraising dinner, which will be held at the Glendale Civic Center on March 30th. He stated that the museum is seeking donations of gift items for the silent auction at the dinner. He encouraged everyone to support this effort. Commissioner Comments Commissioners wished farewell to Ms. Carrie Brown. Her last meeting will be March 21, 2007. She will be moving to Los Angeles, California to work in the Public Arts Program. She thanked everyone for their friendship and support. The commissioners wished her the best of luck. Next Meeting The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission held Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at 4 p.m. at the Fruit Packing Shed Gallery at Sahuaro Ranch Historical Area, 9802 N 59th Avenue, Glendale, Arizona. Adjournment A motion was made by Commission member Passmore to adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded by Commission member Spear and carried unanimously.
