WORKSHOP SESSION
1. UPDATE OF ON ADVERTISING, INC. FOR MARKETING AND ADVERTISING SERVICES FOR
THE PUBLIC FACILITIES, RECREATION AND SPECIAL EVENTS DEPARTMENT IN FY18
Staff Contact and Presenter: Jim Burke, Director, Public Facilities, Recreation and Special Events
Staff Presenter: Diane Williams, Interim Administrator, Convention and Visitors Bureau Division
Other Presenter: Ron Meritt, President, On Advertising, Inc.
Ms. Bower read the item by title.
Councilmember Malnar joined the meeting via phone after the roll was taken.
Mr. Burke provided an update on different social media campaigns and success stories originating
from the outreach. The$300,000 contract was paid out of Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB)
funds and a small portion of General Fund money. He said $80,000 in added value had been
realized due to the contract.
Vice Mayor Tolmachoff asked if staff was able to track visitors who visited Glendale through the
Expedia campaign.
Mr. Meritt said it was a 3-month campaign, that ran December through February and the data
could be broken down by day, if needed.
Vice Mayor Tolmachoff wanted confirmation that during the 3 months, the visitor traffic was
generated by winter visitors and not any major events.
Mr. Meritt said that was correct
Councilmember Clark asked what the added value to the six City festivals was as a result of the
advertisement.
Mr. Meritt said the added value was the television live shots which were at no cost.

Councilmember Clark asked if the effectiveness of the live shots was known.
Mr. Meritt said the live shots attracted traffic within the same day.
Councilmember Clark asked if there was any data showing an increase of the number of hotel
nights that was related directly to the advertising.
Mr. Meritt did not have the hotel figures available.
Councilmember Clark asked if there was information on how effective the print ads were in the
eleven publications that were used.
Mr. Meritt said it was difficult to estimate the effectiveness of print ads. The budget for printing
was reduced and used along with digital campaigns.
Councilmember Clark agreed that printed material was nearly obsolete and social media
advertising should be looked at closely. She asked if any social media sites had been used.
Mr. Meritt said Facebook was used to attract travelers to Glendale.
Councilmember Clark asked if any resources were devoted to Google.
Mr. Meritt said Google resources were used primarily to increase bookings for the Civic Center.
The CVB would use it in the next fiscal year now that the new website was live.
Councilmember Aldama asked if there was information visitors could access to showcase schools
for possible new residents.
Mr. Meritt said there were questions left on Facebook about Glendale schools. A custom piece
could be developed that would work on the CVB website.
Mayor Weiers asked if the information for City events was taken from Glendale's calendar. He
would like a community calendar to be created so all City events were shared with residents and
visitors.
Mr. Burke would follow up with a community calendar.
Vice Mayor Tolmachoff asked if the website was worked on by in-house staff or was it outsourced.
Mr. Meritt said the work was not outsourced.
Vice Mayor Tolmachoff said trending information should be used, such as the sports teams, and
used on Twitter to possibly bring in more visitors.
Mr. Meritt said to avoid sending traffic to the old CVB website, social media had not been used
very much. With the new website, they would be devoting resources specifically for social media
engagement.
Ms. Williams said investments would be made in Facebook boosts to promote events and to drive
traffic to the website.
Vice Mayor Tolmachoff asked if Twitter was used in the social media strategy.
Mr. Meritt said Twitter and Facebook would be key components of the social media campaign.
Instagram had become the new powerhouse in social media and users would soon be able to pull

pictures from the website and combine it with postings to share the same information.
Vice Mayor Tolmachoff said connecting with someone who had their own following to Glendale
could help spread the brand of Glendale.
Councilmember Turner asked if the information regarding the hotel bookings would be made
available to Council.
Mr. Meritt would provide the requested information.
Councilmember Turner was interested in booking dates. The spring training campaign had
missed an opportunity to promote Glendale rather than baseball. He said no promotion towards
the hockey fans was a missed opportunity as well.
Mr. Meritt said resources could be used to promote Glendale to fans of the opposing teams to visit
and experience Glendale.
Vice Mayor Tolmachoff said there was a large concert in Glendale that night and it was nowhere
on social media.
Ms. Williams said the concert was on the website but staff would find new ways to engage the
public through social media.
Mayor Weiers asked if it was possible to interact with website users to know the reasons why they
came to Glendale.
Mr. Meritt said interaction and the capture of information was possible.
