A. QUARTERLY CRIME STATISTICS
Staff member Karen Russell presented the crime statistics for the three public housing
communities through March 2006. No further action was required.
B. DISCUSSION ON GLENDALE RENTAL HOMES COMMUNITIES PROJECT
Staff member Elaine Adamczyk presented this item. Community Housing has begun an
Artist-in-Residence summer program for youth ages 12 to 18 who reside in Glendale's
public housing rental communities.
The artist chosen to develop the program and work directly with the teens is Rebecca
Ross, who has experience with teen art projects. Most recently, she guided Mesa youth in
the design of public art. Ms. Ross gave the commission a background of herself and past
projects. She explained how the youth would be participating in the program during
every phase, from concept development to fieldwork, to production for permanent public
display.
The program is titled "Picture Glendale," and is designed to expose the teens to the
creative process through photography as well as provide career development
opportunities.
Ms. Ross will collaborate with Glendale Community College to not only use the
darkroom and graphic design tools available there, but to also offer them time on-campus,
hopefully creating an atmosphere where they will feel comfortable and increase the
likelihood of registering and continuing to take courses, working towards a degree and
future employment. No further action was required.
6. COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP DIRECTOR'S UPDATE
Director Erik Strunk provided an update of recent and upcoming events for Community
Partnerships. He went over the FY 2006-07 city budget process, and explained to the
commission that the department was given a budget of$13.18 million, which includes federal
monies from HUD for Community Housing. The housing division recently recruited for and
hired a Building Maintenance Supervisor, and also got approval for$170,000 in CDBG funds
for the Glendale Homes power line modernization project. Neighborhood Partnerships
received nine neighborhood improvement grant requests totaling$321,242.96 and the
